Want to Run Your Race Well? Start Here!

Intentional Living· Faith

If you’re reading this, I bet you want to run your race well. Now, I’m not talking about a literal race, although you might very well be a runner and if so, you’ll find value in this as well. But what I’m talking about today is the spiritual race.

Woman running. Run your race well. Marva Smith

Recently, I had the privilege of interviewing Dorina Lazo Gilmore-Young, author of Walk, Run, Soar (affiliate link), a 52-week devotional that has the theme of running and walking. Dorina describes the book as going on a ‘treasure hunt through God’s word looking for all the references of life being like a race’. In it she shares personal stories she’s learned along the trail, along the race of life.

In this How She Does It interview, Dorina and I chatted about:

  • the intersection between faith and running;
  • what it looks like to balance work and rest;
  • why it’s important to move at God’s pace; and
  • how to value community over comparison.

I pray this discussion will bless you as much as it did me.

How She Does It Interview with Dorina Lazo Gilmore-Young

On Comparison

“One of the ways I combat those feelings of comparison is by thinking about running my race together and collaborating with others. So, it’s collaboration over comparison.”

“The Lord wants us to flourish together in community.”

On Balance

“One of the things I do to keep my self centered is being very focused on rhythms of rest and rhythms of work.”

“Lord, would you show me where you want me to focus, what are the things you want me to say no to, what can I gracefully step away from and what can I enthusiastically say yes to?”

“Our culture chases us away from the silence and we fill it with scrolling or multitasking, but sometimes what our souls really need is to sit in silence.”

On Thriving

“We can thrive in all seasons but it means making choices.”

“Thriving is being connected to the vine, being connected to Jesus, being in constant communication with Him.”
